The Yash Bharati award, one of the highest state level awards instituted by the Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav during his tenure as Chief Minister in 1994, is conferred annually by the Uttar Pradesh government for excellence in literature, journalism, sports or cinema. Recently, the UP government headed by Akhilesh Yadav announced that the government would give Rs 50,000 monthly pension to the recipients of Yash Bharti and Padma awards.
Taking the announcement by the UP government in his stride Amitabh Bachchan, who has previously received the award, decided to donate his earning to social causes. In an official statement release, Bachchan states, “Whereas I respect the UP Govt’s honour of the Yash Bharati Award to members of my family, and their decision as per reports in the press, for providing pension of Rs 50, 000 per month to each recipient, I am requesting the UP Govt., with all humility, to redirect the entire amount designated for my family towards any noble charitable scheme or cause that benefits the poor and the needy.” Further talking about taking action on the same Bachchan added, “I shall be writing to the Chief Minister in this regard, in a separate communication.”
Apart from Amitabh Bachchan, his wife Jaya Bachchan, his father the late Harivansh Rai Bachchan and even Abhishek Bachchan have also been recipients of the award in the past.
