Film-making is a process where one constantly learns and hones their craft, whether it is from watching some of the finest films ever made or seeking the advice of film-making luminaries who have left indelible impressions on the film community with their work.
Meet The Director Master Class is an attempt by the Indian Film and TV Directors’ Association (IFTDA) to create a platform where there is a confluence of young aspiring filmmakers and existing greats of Indian cinemawho have made several remarkable films over the years. It is a platform where the film-making community comes together to share ideas and experiences, thereby making for a thoroughly rewarding experience. In the past, IFTDA had organized master classes with some of the finest Indian film-makers working today including Padma Shri Mani Ratnam, six-time National Award-winning film-maker, and Aanand L. Rai, director of films like Raanjhaana, Tanu Weds Manu and Tanu Weds Manu Returns that received unanimous acclaim. These master classes are generally moderated by ace film-makers like Sudhir Mishra, three-time National Award-winning film-maker, and Tigmanshu Dhulia, National Award-winning film-maker.
Speaking about the Master Class, Ashoke Pandit says, “The Film and directors association conceptualized this Master Class to feature the great directors of Indian cinema, where in each of the members chat with each other, sharing their learnings enabling the younger generations to learn from their experience. Apart from this we are also recording each session for posterity so we can maintain a library of sorts with some of the biggest names sharing what they have learnt.”
Further talking about the idea Pandit adds, “Today if you see most people learning about mass media have very little practical knowledge, so here we have a platform where they can get to understand the reality and practicality of the industry they look at joining.”
For their next, Meet The Director master session, IFTDA has roped in David Dhawan, the undisputable king of comedies and who has achieved immense popularity throughout his prolific career. He is remembered for bringing comedy into mainstream Hindi cinema at a time when Hindi films were thriving on action and romance. Since the early nineties, he has consistently dished out some of the funniest comedies of their time and introduced stars that went on to have fruitful careers. The session will be moderated by Rumi Jaffery, who regularly collaborated with Dhawan and is responsible for scripting comedies whose wit and inventiveness remains unparalleled. It will be interesting to find out their take on the current trend of comedies and how comedy in Hindi cinema has evolved over time.
Meet The Director Master Class with David Dhawan will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22, at ISKCON Juhu.
