Salman earlier held the place of having been the only Bollywood actor to sell the satellite rights of his films for a whopping 500 crores, however Hrithik Roshan recently beat that record by selling the rights of six of his films for 550 crores.
However, recent reports have claimed that Salman has signed a new deal with a top television network for a whopping 1000 crores, which includes the satellite rights for his next 10 films and for appearances he will make in the future on the channel.
These films will include Tubelight, his next with Kabir Khan, and his upcoming film with Rajkumar Santoshi.
DNA reports that with the blockbuster success of all of Salman’s recent films, such as Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, “channels are willing to pay him triple the amount to air his films and have his presence grace their shows, be it sports-based shows or reality shows.”
He had a deal with this channel previously, but Salman has reportedly renewed his deal given that all his recent films are making over 200 crores at the box office.
This trend started with Ajay Devgn, who had reportedly signed a deal of Rs 400 crore for 10 films with the same channel as Salman, back when he was shooting for Bodyguard. Varun Dhawan, as well, signed a deal for Rs 300 crore for his 10 films.
Films such as Dilwale earned Rs 60 crore, while Bajirao Mastani earned Rs 50 crore in satellite rights. Most deals are cracked before the film’s shoot begins, atleast in case of big budget films starring big actors, and the money earned via rights is used in the production budget.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan earned Rs 80 crore in satellite rights, while the Hindi dub of Baahubali was sold for Rs 20 crore.
That Salman Khan is potentially dabbling in a deal close to a 1000 crores should not come as a surprise, given that he is arguably the biggest star of the Hindi film industry, and the new king of box office (sorry Aamir). However, as far the satellite rights for Sultan is concerned, YRF will have to negotiate with a channel directly as it will be a one-off deal.
