In conversation with Shailendra Singh as he speaks about his debut film, his inspirations and much more
Excerpts from the interview:
Tell us something about your directorial debut SUNSHINE MUSIC TOURS & TRAVELS?
It’s a film based on travelling and how a young guy fulfills his dreams to travel India. A guy who hasn’t even seen a concert in his entire life how he faces and the minute he sees a live performance how does he feel. It’s about a journey of a guy who overcomes obstacles in life and travels to reach a destination. Its starts with a guy named Sunburn who starts his own travel company with his group of friends.
We heard it’s based on a true story?
Yes it is. I keep travelling and one day I met a guy and he wanted to travel the world and he had a dream to travel. He narrated me his story and then I thought of writing this story.
Why did you choose a film with a travel genre?
The film is youth centric and it’s for youngsters as they understand life. We aren’t preaching anything, the movie is about masti, mauj and fun via achieving this. And believe me travel teaches you a lot. I would also say that it’s not a romantic film it’s about how you achieve your dreams.
Several movies are based on travel like DIL CHAHATA HAI, DIL DHADAKNE DO, ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA how is your movie different from these?
I agree there are several movies which are based on travel. While my movie is about the journey of young kids how they travel and achieve their goals. Apart from personal journey the movie is shot in exotic locations.
Why did you choose Sunny Kaushal for the role?
I didn’t want a star for my film as I wanted an actor. When you cast a star you have to pamper him. You have to make variations according to them. But when you cast an actor you can make him live the character. As far as Sunny is concerned I never knew he is Vicky’s brother. He gave the audition and I liked him. His eyes speak volumes and actor should emote and should be expressive that’s what I like the most about Sunny.
AKIRA has also released along with SUNSHINE, do you think the mass appeal is higher for AKIRA than your film?
I would want the best for both the films. They are two different genres. AKIRA is about women power while SUNSHINE MUSIC TOURS & TRAVELS is about achieving your dreams.
Are you planning to direct more films?
I am making a Bollywood version of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. Hope it connects with the audience and the other one is based on VIP wedding in Punjab. Both these movies have a different concept.
