Sonakshi Sinha is back with a bang in action drama AKIRA. Moving ahead of eye-candy roles in a superstar, this is indeed the first film in Sonakshi’s career where she is the hero as well as the heroine of the film. With AKIRA, Sonakshi too joins the bandwagon of woman empowerment. The film deals with how a girl combats challenges in her life.
Sona has done high octane action sequences, learnt MMA (mix martial arts), and done daredevil stunts all by herself to get into the skin of the character.
In conversation with Sonakshi as she speaks about her role in AKIRA, her rigorous tryst with action sequences and much more. Here are the excerpts from the interview:
You are back after a gap, why did you choose an action-packed movie like AKIRA?
I was waiting for the right project to come my way. However, AKIRA took time and I am glad it has finally come. I guarantee you, people will enjoy the movie. My director A.R. Murugadoss wanted a film that would showcase women power. And he had directed me in the movie HOLIDAY.
While we have we have seen enough female-oriented projects, in what aspect AKIRA stands apart?
The movie doesn’t simply talk about women power in a subtle way, but also focuses on various issues that a girl faces and how she combats. In fact the issue of ragging has also been dealt in the film.
How was it working with the director-turned-actor Anurag Kashyap?
Indeed amazing! Anurag has been a fantastic antagonist. He is extremely good in the film. It was delight to see him work as an actor and not try to be a director. He didn’t interfere with the direction. I have suggested him that he should take some more acting assignments.
You are the new Khiladi and action hero in town, what do you have to say?
It has been a joyride. I loved shooting every bit of the movie. I have pushed myself hard to play this character.
You are the actor as well as actress of the film? Don’t you miss hero in the film?
(Smiles), No I don’t miss hero in AKIRA. It feels nice to work without a hero. After romancing with so many heroes this was a fresh journey. Even the script also didn’t demand me to romance. However I compensated by doing action sequences.
Did you take a cue for action from your co-stars Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar?
I observed Salman and Akshay’s films closely. I remember when I would watch their films I would always be like when will I do action sequences like them..
The response has been tremendous for the trailer of the film? Any compliment that you would like to share?
I am grateful people loved the trailer. In fact, Akshay Kumar called me and said that the trailer looks really good and it will definitely be a game changer for me. That is such a huge compliment from an action star himself. Ajay Devgn too praised in a humorous way on micro-blogging site and said if you are doing action what will he do? Indeed, I feel good when I get such good compliment for the film.
Were you injured while shooting any action sequence?
I have done everything but there was a lot of cable work involved which I was taught on the set. Furthermore, I learnt mix martial arts so that I do justice to action sequences.
Have you ever been bullied?
I was hefty and over weight as a kid. And I was teased by many times, but I would give it back in no time. I would stand for myself. Yes I was ragged and I too ragged some of them in college. But interestingly we are still good friends. I feel one shouldn’t rag one more to an extent that they get traumatized.
