Talvar music review

A Junglee Pictures and Vishal Bhardwaj produced and written, murder mystery/ suspense drama, TALVAR, based on the shocking (real life) murder of a young girl does not really promise much scope for music. But since its Vishal himself at the helm of musical affairs with the legendary Gulzar (whose daughter, Meghna happens to be the director here), one can look forward to some iconoclastic songs.

The theme song ‘Insaaf’ has the spirit of the movie written all over it. Sombre, haunting background musical arrangements and Arooj Aftab’s purposeful deep throated emotive rendition add to the grim, gloomy but still hopeful situation.

It’s really heartening to hear the enigmatic Sukhwinder Singh (after quite a while) in full form in the situational ‘Patli Gali’ that has reminiscence of ‘Chappa Chappa’ (MAACHIS). Lovely Hindustani musical arrangements and interesting lyrics are the USP of the track.

Another sombre, Vishal Bhardwaj-Gulzar trademark composition, Zinda is sung with emotions by Rekha Bhardwaj. Just strings in the background makes this an almost unplugged song except towards the end where one encounters a soft crescendo.

Arjit’s mellowed vocals highlight the pathos and tragedy of the leads in another situational number, Shaam Ke Saaye’.

Summing up, the audio of TALVAR is totally in sync with the script of the movie and therefore all songs sound similar which is a bit of a dampener. It will not be wrong to say that we expected much more from the Vishal-Gulzar team. ‘Patli Gali’ and ‘Zinda’ are our picks. The composition may appeal only after the release of the film.
