In an industry that goes all out to promote itself, the hype around Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra’s song – ‘Kala Chashma‘ – from their film Baar Baar Dekho has been quite out of the ordinary.
Katrina and Sidharth initially unveiled a ‘first look’ from the song. Then a teaser from the song was released, followed by a second. All the while, a countdown was set up to the release of the complete song itself.
‘Kala Chashma‘ was released on the Flickbay app on Wednesday morning, and having seen it, we can say that the hype isn’t entirely undeserved.
This is a classic ‘promotional’ song, which has replaced the ‘item number’ in recent films.
Like ‘High Heels Te Nachne‘ from Ki & Ka, ‘Gulabo‘ from Shandaar or ‘Let’s Nacho‘ from Kapoor & Sons, ‘Kala Chashma‘ too falls into the category of special songs crafted for a film that show off the leads in glamorous settings, and while perhaps not helping the story along in any pivotal way, does help drum up a lot of curiosity about the movie itself.
‘Kala Chashma‘ – based on the hit original by Prem Hardeep and sung by the rapper Badshah – is your typical big, fat desi wedding song.
It starts off with Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif dancing in full wedding attire – Katrina in a red lehenga-choli and Sidharth in a sherwani and pugri. Of course, they have the ‘kala chashma‘ on throughout the song.
We’re also introduced to other actors from Baar Baar Dekho in flashes, Rajit Kapur being prominent among them.
Of course, what’s a song without costume changes, and we see Katrina too slip into a more trendy choli-leggings combination while she and Sidharth burn up the dance floor.
We’ve seen Katrina pull off some pretty nifty moves in ‘Chikni Chameli‘. In ‘Kala Chashma‘ she outdoes herself. Sidharth Malhotra is a natural, and he pulls off the choreography with ease.
As for the music itself, this is your typical bhangra-pop-rap mix with thumping beats and an engaging riff that will have you tapping your feet.
This may not be music that touches your heart, but it’ll definitely pull you onto the dance floor. And you’re probably going to hear it at the sangeet ceremony of every wedding you’ll attend for the rest of this year.
“I am eagerly waiting to see the reaction of the audience to this song. We have worked really hard to put together this enhanced version with (a lot of) energy,” Sidharth Malhotra said.
Baar Baar Dekho is directed by Nitya Mehra and is slated to release on 9 September this year. It is a love story that traces a character’s life from the ages of 16 to 60.
